Tararith's story

I still remember the day, seven years ago, when my parents announced that they would send me to study in Australia. I was so shocked and worried that I was going to lose all my childhood friends, and not able to see my grandparents every day.

However, I still decided to come to Australia and chose a NSW government school, Canley Vale High School, as it is well known for supporting international students, and providing strong academic support for students who fall behind.

Initially, I found it’s hard to assimilate and fit in as there was a bit of culture shock. However, as time went by and with the support from the school's international student coordinator, I started to fit in and began to make new friends. They were assisting in every way and gave me advice on how to communicate with my fellow peers which was very helpful. For instance, we would have an international lunch at the end of each term. This was an organised lunch for international students to catch up and interact.

The achievement that I am most proud of was, being selected as the school captain of Canley Vale High School. It was surreal as I didn't believe that I would be able to achieve such an accomplishment.

The general lifestyle in NSW was very intriguing as everyone is so different from my hometown. Although it may take some time to assimilate into the Australian way of living, I now find it enjoyable.

Now that I have completed the HSC, I’ve decided to continue my study in Sydney. I am currently studying for a Bachelor of Psychology Honours and hope to continue into a Master of Clinical Psychology. Eventually, I hope to work and gain experience in Australia's social health industry.

As I said, assimilating to a new country is hard. However, it can open many new doors that you never believed existed. Therefore, I encourage you to believe in your vision, shoot your shot and pursue what you believe is suitable for your future.
