NSW Bushfires Update for International Students, Agents and Parents

There have been major bushfires in NSW during December 2019 and January 2020 and the situation is continuing. You may have seen images in the media of the devastating fires and understandably may be very concerned about the situation.

The metropolitan areas of Sydney, Newcastle and Wollongong are not currently threatened by fires but have experienced smoke haze on some days. The major fires are on the South Coast of NSW, and the closest major fires are around 100km from the Sydney Metropolitan area, in areas such as the Blue Mountains and to the southwest of Sydney.

The safety and wellbeing of international students is our priority and the team at DE International will be:

  • closely monitoring the situation
  • providing updates if there is a change to the situation, particularly in Sydney, Wollongong or Newcastle
  • contacting students enrolled or commencing in schools outside the metropolitan areas which are affected by bushfires.

You may also access fire updates on the website of the NSW Rural Fire Service: https://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/

Students with respiratory issues may be affected by the smoke haze and should ensure they bring their required medication with them and declare their condition to their homestay provider.

We hope that the situation will soon ease and the fires come under control. At this stage, we are expecting students to enrol in their schools as planned at the start of the school year.
