Dove's story

My name is Dove Weng, and I come from Fujian, China. I came to NSW in 2017 for Year 9 in a NSW Government School – Asquith Girls High School.

I graduated in 2021 and now I’m doing a Bachelor of Psychology at the University of Sydney.

I chose NSW Government Schools because my parents wanted me to study abroad in Australia to experience a new culture, and I feel Sydney is an excellent place to live.

When I first went to school, I found it was challenging to get involved in school activities due to the language barrier. However, the school staff were very supportive, especially my International Student Coordinator, who was very patient, and helped me significantly with my academic needs, especially during my preparation for the Higher School Certificate (HSC). She was also my English as an additional language or dialect (EAL/D) teacher, so English became my favourite subject in high school.

The achievements of which I’m most proud include being elected as a Multicultural Prefect and being selected as a NSW Government Schools International Student Ambassador. These achievements support my goal to help other international students to adjust to their new community and environment.

I’ve enjoyed the lifestyle in Sydney most of the time, especially the fresh air and blue sky. I enjoyed going to the beach with friends, having a BBQ with my homestay family, and studying in the library with peers for HSC. There are lots of memorable moments in my experience in Sydney.

For students coming to NSW, please do not be afraid of speaking with others. I know many international students are not very confident in their English, but it doesn’t matter. Talk to friends, talk to teachers, and talk to everyone. It is okay to make mistakes, and you will improve your English skill by communicating with others.
