Henry's story

My name is Henry Chan and I am from Hong Kong, China. I started studying at a NSW government school, Kogarah High School, in 2022.

I chose to study in NSW because of its high-quality education which offers opportunities for me to acquire more knowledge. When I first started at Kogarah High School, I found that English was the most challenging part due to the language barrier. Fortunately, my friends and teachers were very kind and helped me with learning English, such as teaching me some new vocabulary and Aussie slang, which helped me to assimilate into Australian culture.

My teachers are very helpful. They always helped me with studying whenever I needed it.

My favourite subject is Japanese because I love Japanese culture and I think learning a new language is very useful. My Japanese teacher gave me lots of assistance out of the class, like helping me to practise for the HSC speaking test during the term break.

My most enjoyable excursion with Kogarah High School was the Sydney East Table Tennis Knockout in 2022, which provided a fantastic opportunity to compete against students from other schools. We gained valuable experience during this competition.

I love the beautiful landscapes in Sydney. One of my favourite things to do in Sydney is riding my bike in Brighton Le Sands, a beautiful beach, and watching the sunrise there.

For future students coming to NSW, don't be afraid to ask questions whenever you need. The teachers and staff are happy to help you, but you need to let them know what you need. Be confident to speak to others.

Don't worry about the language barrier. Your classmates and teachers understand and will help you if you need. Also try to participate in different extracurricular activities which can help you expand your social circle.
